Slab Top End Table

A quirky end table from a couple of sticks and some pipe. Facebook; https://www.facebook.com/TimberToneAust/ I had this crosscut slab from a macadamia tree I helped a mate cut down in a backyard. I really like the look of the end grain of this timber and if you squint hard enough, the slab also looks a bit like the Australian continent. Macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia) is grown in Australia for its nuts and is not commercially available as a woodworking timber. I have rip sawn it before and it has a beautiful lace type pattern visible when quarter sawn. Unfortunately it is also very prone to checking and borer attack once cut. This particular tree was actually one of the largest of this species I have seen, with the widest part of the bole nearly 600mm (23 5/8"). The legs were Camphor Laurel (Cinnamomum camphora) from a tree that had fallen on a workshop at my workplace about 10 years ago. I held onto a couple of pieces at the time thinking I really wanted to make something from them. It was about then that I actually started woodworking and this is only the second thing I have made from that tree; the other was a teapot shaped clock for a small tea importing company. Overall I'm pretty happy with how the table came out apart from the cast in bubble. If you're looking for more epoxy working and finishing techniques definitely check out Stone Coat Countertop's youtube channel; where I picked them up from. They have some great videos of all aspects and Mike has a real passion for the product that shows through in the videos. Stone Coat Countertops: https://www.youtube.com/user/bulldogquist
